Effects of fire on soil organic matter in northern Amazonian forest fragments

چکیده
ABSTRACT Forest fires incorporate pyrogenic organic matter into the soil, affecting characteristics of soil (SOM) due to its high aromaticity, increasing renewal time. However, factors that control concentration and chemical composition structure are still little known. fragments dispersed in a savanna matrix northern Brazilian Amazon frequently impacted by fires, which can affect SOM within fragments. The aim this study was analyse border interior six forest Roraima savanna, Amazon. Soil samples were collected at 10-cm intervals up 1 m depth each fragment. material determined with 10% HF solution elemental composition, thermogravimetric index, 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopic analysis determined. There no significant difference aromaticity index between interior. alkyl C structures (22 25%) (19 29%) indicated occurrence medium-intensity area. showed thermal stability Our results pronounced quality evaluated fragments, indicating compartment is stable throughout

The effect of fire on soil organic matter--a review.
The extent of the soil organic carbon pool doubles that present in the atmosphere and is about two to three times greater than that accumulated in living organisms in all Earth's terrestrial ecosystems. In such a scenario, one of the several ecological and environmental impacts of fires is that biomass burning is a significant source of greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. Neverthel...
متن کاملEffects of fire on soil organic matter quality along an altitudinal sequence on
Soil organic matter (SOM) can directly be affected by wildfires, both in terms of quantity and quality. The combustion is often incomplete, leading to the formation of pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM), a highly heterogeneous material with prevailing aromatic nature. Focusing our attention on PyOM, we investigated an altitudinal soil sequence on Mount Etna, Italy, ranging from 500 m to 1800 m asl...

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of forest road construction on the Soil Organic Carbon Stock (SOCS) in Ziarat Catchment. Therefore, soil samples were collected from five land use types including road construction, cultivated area, channel bank, pasture and forest land and soil organic carbon concentration and bulk density were measured in the samples and SOCS were...
متن کاملFire effects on soil organic matter content, composition, and nutrients in boreal interior Alaska
Boreal ecosystems contain a substantial fraction of the earth’s soil carbon stores and are prone to frequent and severe wildfires. In this study, we examine changes in element and organic matter stocks due to a 1999 wildfire in Alaska. One year after the wildfire, burned soils contained between 1071 and 1420 g/m2 less carbon than unburned soils. Burned soils had lower nitrogen than unburned soi...
متن کاملFire effects on temperate forest soil C and N storage.
Temperate forest soils store globally significant amounts of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Understanding how soil pools of these two elements change in response to disturbance and management is critical to maintaining ecosystem services such as forest productivity, greenhouse gas mitigation, and water resource protection. Fire is one of the principal disturbances acting on forest soil C and N st...
